Everton needed to respond on the back of a poor performance against Bournemouth. A response it wasn’t.
(Ratings are based on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being awful, 5 being average and 10 being brilliant)
No ratings given for subs brought on after 70 minutes.
Jordan Pickford – 5 – Couldn’t have done much about either goal. Didn’t make any handling errors but distribution from goal kicks, on a couple of occasions, went west. Not of any great concern though.
Cuca Martina – 5 –Has come under criticism from us in recent weeks, but put in a decent showing today. Got forward better, could still improve with his overlapping runs in support of the winger.
Michael Keane – 4 – Backed off far to much for their first goal and allowed too much space on numerous occasions. Needs to show more.
Ashley Williams – 4 – Showed more than Keane and looks a lot more comfortable under pressure. Like Keane though he allowed to much space and backed off too much for both goals.
Mason Holgate – 5 – Dealt with situations well, got forward well and provided more support to the winger. Some good crosses in the 10 minutes of football we played in the second half.
Tom Davies – 7 – Has struggled on the ball of late, but raised his game again today. Gave a lot of energy but wasn’t supported by those around him. Did the work of central midfielder and number 10 for most of the match.
Morgan Schniederlin – 3 – Unsupportive, poor on the ball and often lost possession and didn’t track back with any intent. Frustrating too watch.
Wayne Rooney – 4 – Started the game as though it was set up for him to dominate. But, became sloppy with his passes in the second half, although he probably shouldn’t have been subbed unless it was for another creative player such as Sigurdsson.
Nikola Vlasic – 5 – We’ve been crying out for him to get a game, but never really got a foot hold in the game. Looked like a player that hadn’t had much game time, but provided glimpses of what we’ve lacked out wide.
Yannick bolasie – 4 – Struggled massively to have any kind of impact on the game. Looks overweight and still not quite at it although he had a good first 10 minutes of the first half.
Oumar Niasse – 4 – Ran aimlessly for 80 minutes and was often on the wing when he needed to he central. Didn’t hold the ball up enough and jumped too early for our only clear chance of the game in the second half.
James McCarthy – 6 – Made Morgan Schniederlin look a fool in the 25 minutes he was on the pitch. Closed down everything within 10 yards of him and passed the ball well. Needs to cut out the late challenges like the one he made on Juan Mata, but if he’d have started with Davies I think we could have been looking at a more positive result.
Aaron Lennon – 5 – Like the two wingers above, Lennon found it tough to get on the ball and make a difference.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin – NR – Should have been on the pitch with Niasse and should have been brought on with the other two subs. By the time he came on the game had gone.
